Description

Do you ever hear crickets when you pose a question to your class? Do you want to encourage lively discussions? In this workshop, we will discuss strategies to facilitate active participation in your classroom. Come to learn about and experience a variety of teaching methods that you can implement. We will also develop strategies to incorporate these teaching methods while maintaining order in the classroom. Participants will begin to design an activity or teaching approach and prepare for potential challenges that may arise. This workshop is open to all graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, it is a requirement for completion of the University Teaching Foundations (UTF) Certificate, and also supports the ASPIRE program.

Intended Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify different types of interaction that can take place in the classroom and list examples in your discipline
  • Examine educational literature to gain an appreciation of the value of using active learning in the classroom
  • Select and adapt various active learning activities to suit your individual teaching style and discipline
  • Discuss past experiences and strategies with fellow grad students
  • Recognize and prepare for classroom management challenges related to facilitating active learning strategies
